Yes, that's the process for almost every game i've done maps from, except for Perfect Dark.

As for your other question, it depends on the platform and game. I try and work with the actual game files and extracting the models through them that way, and if it's not possible then I use "3d rippers". The problem with 3d ripping tools, is usually it only rips what you can see, so large maps take forever to make that way. They're pretty much a last resort.

In all seriousness, I've been wanting to convert Shadow of the Colossus - at least some parts of it - to Q3, but reverse-engineering is hard. How do you do your work? Frame dumping, or actual model conversion?

yep. In the actual game for the wii, they just added tons of grass models over top of the terrain to hide the ground textures. Probably one of the many ways they macguyver'd the game so it could run on the wii. The stretched textures on the cliff sides are my fault however.

I just started it. It says right in the description it has missing textures, and bugs. It's a work in progress, this isn't a release.
