Next, I'm making a 3D maze. I made a small prototype, 7*8*7 spaces, and even something as small as that is still pretty fun to explore. My friend took almost a minute and a half to find the finish line, though he's dumb and it took me 40 seconds.
However, the main map will be 16^(3), which equates to a whopping 4096 spaces (the other one was 392). I expect it to take at least 5 minutes for most people t o find the finish line. I could add random spawns and it would be a great hide and seek map - it would take a long damn time to find other players in a space as massive as this.
I used patches for all the walls, which means all the walls are 0u thick, and thus don't interfere with gameplay as much as, say, an 8u brush would. It's also a hell of a lot easier to map. Each "space" is 64^(3), so you can jump up and down and whatnot without too much trouble, though there are some points where you can fall and not jump back up. For this, I'm going to give the player a permanent 5 plasma ammo.
It takes almost half an hour to do one "layer" of the maze, and the maze is 16 "layers" wide. This means that it will take over 10 hours of straight work to finish a map that looks incredibly plain. It also means that it will take a while to finish - I've only done 4 layers today and I've been working on it and the prototype all day long. However, it will be finished tomorrow, and it might be the first map for me to release on Worldspawn in over 2 years, which is kinda cool.
