The chinese (for a lack of a better world i'll say) ceasars thought of themselves as inventors who could toy with their people. Mao himself thought to be in line with this tradition, and designed the great leap forward. About 30 million people starved. I guess we'll see consequences less severe, Zyax.

I can't really say much about this idea. But I'll instead ask the people who do play a lot on the servers these days.
Is it common that there is a crappy map running on a server and it is impossible to callvote another since too many people like playing it? (lol) If this is the case, you should recall and reflect upon the word majority.

So if the maps are so bad, you could simply not callvote them, that would have the same effect as them not being there in the first place. Also, (I'm guessing that) most new authors were a bit crappy when they started making maps. Telling them that they suck and we don't want to play their maps can't really be very encouraging for them to try harder and become better mappers.
The big satisfaction of creating stuff is when other people can take part of it. I think that a "mainstream filter" (for lack of better wording) like this would really stunt creativity and motivation for a fair share of mappers.

what's the point?
I mean, do those "shitty worthless maps" somehow damage the servers?
in this case, I could agree... but I don't think there's any good reason to kill minor authors' creativity

I guess the point is to play good maps more instead of setting slightly obove average times. From my point of view like every CPM map i play is a strafe map. Of thos strafe maps like 60% seem to have been created under 2 hours and are just ripoffs of ripoffs of 5 year old maps. They even take out the pads. They map one big floor with some gaps here and there but it's in fact just a regular floor.
The reason for this is obvious. It's hard to test out the spacing of pads or larger gaps since the speeds in CPM differ alot. They don't want to think about where people have to land to get around corners or obstacles. Testing costs time right? Time we don't have. Releasing the map is more important than testing. That's why the map quality goes down. I can think back to a time when there where "-fix" maps. Ha, even "-fix-fix" maps. And before that some maps went to serious betatesting with tons of prereleases (tr1ckhouse-beta3, cos1_beta7b, b0_beta6, ...). Since the public accepted this about 2 years ago the quality went downhill ever since.

I can see your point though.
So, how can we improove the situation without rejecting maps?
How about callvote ratios based on the mapname? (serious hacking required)
[example: Crap map -> 80% of players have to "vote yes" instead of 50%]

!random could be influenced on map ratings.

Those are ideas that come to my mind while typing this. Do you have any ideas too?

UPDATE: So this is what i get for bringing this up?

I'm against restricting/regulating maps. Just because I may not like a map doesn't mean I want everyone else to lose the right to play it. Lets keep all the maps available and let the players sort it out in game like usual.

Hopefully, the lesser skilled mappers will eventually start producing more of the "higher quality" maps you refer to, but until then I'm just glad someone is willing to work at it and keep things going (because it's not going to be me!)

Total count of maps: 8,705
Total count of authors: 2,521
Total count of files: 7,595
Total size of files: 19.12 GB
Count of Defrag maps: 4,370
Count of CTF maps: 970

Let the voting begin!...

Honestly it would take AGES for a map to be accepted cause I don't think many ppl(people) use the ranking system, dunno.
So ppl(people) should start voting on every single map ever made to be able to play them all + they all need a high enough rating... that's a bit crazy now is it. It already takes a fair amount of time before new maps get on the servers (except for A*51 servers, like wtf? :( ). Example: Take lovet, he makes a new map some may like other will hate it till they die. If the lovers vote for a 3-5 rating and the haters 1-3 MAX it will at least a few days or weeks to be available on the servers.

So just leave it like it is...and try to get new maps on the CPM1&2 servers quicker pretty please ^^

Implement a system where you can rate the maps directly from playing them on the servers. Like !ratemap [1-5]. Then print the average rating along with the mapname when a vote is called.

Edit: Better than ratings from 1 to 5 is ofc a simple "Like it"/"Don't like it". It always is.

greetings

the maps already take forever to get on mDd and the taste in maps varies, i like the maps that most people hate since i like the maps where you have to think more then have the skills/scripts to power strafe. New mappers most often make a bit crappier maps but also they make not that commersial maps which is what I like. So the idea of voting what maps are going on the servers is kinda ghey to me. To please us all and keep new maps coming dont upl maps by rating.

You can however emphasize the maps that have got a good rating so people see them more often then the lovet-WHATEVER maps :) And take it from me I'd never play a map offline to see how it is to later play it online, thats just annoying. Keep the community & the various taste in maps alive.

This may be a suggestion for the developer of q3a but i'd like and I can develop of necc. a login for mapper so we can manage maps and fixes and whatever more easily.

/ yes but im fresh out of orkness

Well, i think rate each map to be accepted is not proper at all. i like the idea to improve this situation. i saw good maps from mapper begginer (like yave first map) and maps done in 10 min (like pornstar maps) still good, or crazy maps like aidsrun_cpm, boris-toture, etc. they should not to be rate for any approval.

Mappers need to feel free to do whatever they want, and they will learn for each map they do. that happened to me since minions-run1 pad spacing suck and i still learning and trying to improve it.

i believe that we need to focus only in map with big bugs, for example nxo-bored, is a good map in my opinion, is about 20 sec, then when you check !top FUCK 4 seconds, timereset problem...

why not simply made a poll only for maps who deserve it, then the author can replace it or delete it. less work and more effective.

im just guessing
cheers
