Without looking at the code I'd say it's very likely an unsigned 16 bit integer that is interpreted as signed at some place.
The problem probably ordinates somewhere in the infamous vector snapping function.

I had the same problems at compact-hardcore

Yeah this looks like a 16-bit integer overflow congrats on doing that. I don't think this is a server "bug" but rather something in the defrag or quake code?
