The limit is buried in depth of q3 src.
I'm not even sure, if there is some mod with this limit raised.
from Entity plus mod manual:g_listEntity is a good tool to determine if the player of your map is likely to hit an entity limit. There's
a global limit of 1024 entities that can be present in the game at once. This is a hard limit that
Quake 3 imposes.
But some optimizations can be made; for example, dropping speakers, mover's speakers and jumppad ones, if the problem occurs.
Also there was some patch for server engine, that allowed playing maps, like eastrun (would like to know what it changed).
Other related remark: num-of-ents-to-crash decreases with the following order:
-offline loading w/o ents (@tricksmod), map_restart to df mode
-straight offline df mode
-online df
-online df with proxymod
so we have kinda the worst case here
^ this. Raising the entity limit would be engine specific and in doing so it would require all players to use a modified, newer engine. People that still use the quake3.exe engine wouldn't be able to play those maps.
