Input requested: map i'm working on

Postby DF///Kov3nant » Mar 13th, '11, 1:17 pm

Hey guys. I started a new map yesterday after about a year of being out of the game. I just need to know if it's something you guys would play, or if i should start on a different concept.
Basically at the beginning you drop down a tunnnel into an ob that gives a speed of about 1500u. Strafe down a long hallway to a jump, and then around a corner to a tp.

Room 2 starts with rl with limited ammo to reach a high and far out platform where you get a pg and have to plasma the rest of the way down to another tp. This room is about 4 or 5000u long.

3rd room will be a nice strafe, about 20 seconds with curves, crates, and other various obstacles.

The map as a whole should be about a 40 second run. And if you guys have played my previous map kov3nant-apple then you know i go for function over beauty because i'm too dumb to make my own textures.

Anyways does this sound like an ok layout? I'd like to make a map that gets good rotation on the servers. My last map had about 700 downloads. Nothing compared to pornstar's maps, but still not bad.

bounce start - standard
strafe hallway - standard
rocket with limit on ammo, not health - standard
...

Your map will be played but it's nothing out of the ordinary.

Here are some thoughts:
Why use teleporters? Teleporters are a flow killer. They reset you to a certain speed value which is pretty annoying, when you hit them at 3000 u/s.

What happend to those maps where the player can choose the weapon he thinks is the best for a certain trick?

Why do people always give hazard suid when it comes to weapons, nowadays? I like the health limit of maps like runackman.

thanks for the reply. i actually hadn't planned on a hazard suit. so the health would in fact be limited.

as for the TP, you're right, that could get annoying to lose all that speed. i think i'll connect the sections instead, and take away the weapons from the previous section. easy enough and it'll flow better. thanks for your input and also for teaching me plasma climbing 4 years ago lol.

if anyone else has input, please share.

uhm.. dont u create maps cause u have an idea and u want the satisfaction of seeing created while enjoying the process of the creation? our community is quite small, u wont get any kind of fame and u wont get money for doing it. the only proof of some type of recognition is a number on q3a. and if that number reaches a high level, it is not a reason to continue nor quit, its merely a bonus.

there are a hundreds of maps with basically the same layout, with the same tricks. teleporters wont neccessarily screw up the flow. low speeds can feel really fast if youre running through a narrow corridor, details can also add a feeling of speed. the position and direction of these details can enhance or decrease the feel of it too. and do u want it to feel like a fast map, or do u want the feeling of "flying freely" through an open space? speed doesnt necessarily have anything to do with units per second, it can be about the amount of mousemovement, the number of jumps, going up or down, if its a straight or crooked path. do u want it to be a long or short map? what about the difficulty? the challenge of a map can be of great weight, or it might not matter. will there be gaps or a solid floor? do u want to block certain places with clips or let the player run freely? how do u want it to be played? do u even want to decide how it should be played or let that be up to the player? if someone finds a great shortcut to pull five seconds of the map, is that a good or a bad thing? do u want a dynamic map or just a straight strafemap to allow the player to really push his strafing? is it easier to create a dynamic map with the use of weapons? will u be working with "natural" light, with _light or with no specific light at all? do u want it to feel like an actual place or is that not of importance?

basically, there are an infinite amount of questions, and an even infiniter (:P) amount of answers.

And then the player sees the levelshot and instantly flipps to the next map.

Why don't you post screenshots of your map?

The reason i'm asking for input is because the biggest reward for me is when i come in a server and someone tells me how much they like my map. that for me is just awesome!

this project is moving incredibly slow. a year ago i could do a map like this in 2 to 3 days a couple hours each day. however nowadays i have a newborn in the house so it's tough finding the time. i haven't posted any screenshots because only the first section is mapped. and it will be changed. and also the textures i'm using right now are just temporary so i don't have to stare at caulk the whole time until i figure out the perfect textures.

I really appreciate you guys giving your input. Even though i've been mapping for a few years, i still feel like a beginner. and seeing some of the awesome maps that some of the guys on this site make. i know that i could learn a lot.
